Antonio is the illicit product of a night of forbidden passion - his mother is a Catholic countess, his father a Moorish ruler of Andalusia. Abandoned by his mother in infancy, Antonio is brought up by Sister Maria who devotes her life to the children of an orphanage. Unaware of his illustrious parentage, Antonio follows an arduous path both inside and outside the confines of the orphanage. Escaping from a pestilence which sweeps through the orphanage, he is saved by the rich and powerful nobleman, Don Salazar. And it is at the opulent Casa de Salazar that Antonio embarks on the unpredictable path that will unite his destiny with that of Spain itself....
