1893. Mattie Case finds her limits tested when yet another accusation is thrown at Henry’s feet. Though her husband is beyond suffering the attacks on his character, the pain caused to her son is more than she will tolerate. As a result, she is compelled to uncover a truth that the new police chief has chosen to ignore.

All the while, he works toward organizing his department but discovers the problems he must overcome are far greater than any he anticipated. As questions continue to assail him, he wonders who he can trust. He even begins to question his own mind on the matter. Why is it that Henry Case’s widow, Mattie, is one of the rare few in Candlestick determined to discover the truth?

Series Summary: Mrs. Henry Case finds her amateur sleuthing skills are tested while searching for clues to mysteries both past and present. Unwilling to take everything she hears at face value, Mattie determinedly works to uncover the truth. Faced with several hurdles along the way, she discovers that it will require all of her intelligence to find the answers she needs. Chief of police Garth Hawke wonders if he can trust anyone around him. One thing is obvious. No one in the city of Candlestick appears to trust him. He hopes that will change over time. His plan to win them over is simple. He just needs to do a better job than his predecessor. Given the sensational circumstances under which Henry Case lost his life, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
