They Stay for Death

(1980)
(A book in the Antony Maitland series)
A novel by

Antony Maitland, barrister-detective extraordinaire, has not been impressed by the provincial town of Chedcombe. Nor has Chedcombe been impressed by him - his previous sorties there have let to scandal and confusion among the local worthies. Yet now he has been asked to go back there once again; asked by his aunt Vera, who has learned that something may be dreadfully wrong in the quiet little town. In the Restawhile Hotel, a private nursing-home outside Chedcombe, three old people have recently died. True, they had all been quite old, and the doctor who had attended the home signed the death certificates without hesitation. Nevertheless, gossip is rife in Chedcombe - and all three of the deceased were very rich. As Maitland has no standing from which to make enquiries, he goes to Chedcombe more to please his aunt than to search for mischief. But while he is there a fourth death takes place in the Restawhile, and the skeptical barrister suddenly realizes that the town gossips may indeed be right. This time there is a post mortem - and the result proves to be murder. Sara Woods is well known for the ingenuity of the conundrums she provides for Antony Maitland to solve. This one is especially baffling, and reader and detective alike are kept completely in the dark until the final, wicked revelation. Book Dust Jacket
