Spring 1233. The abbey is in turmoil. The bishop of London has claimed to have the body of Saint Edmund and Bury’s saint is a fake. Brother Walter is sent down to London to try to persuade the bishop otherwise. On his way back he is attacked by a gang of bandits one of whom is mysteriously killed.
Meanwhile the new abbot of Bury goes to Rome to see the pope but on his way back he too suddenly drops dead.
And a messenger from Rome is also killed by person or persons unknown outside Bury town.
