'Night of the Iquana,' is considered by many to be Williams' last 'great' plays. Williams' was at the height of his powers when he wrote this moving, provocative play. This play is the finest example of William's manipulation of fantasies into realities and vice-versa. The play opens at the unreal setting of an insolated Mexican hotel in the tropical forests above a city. The time is equally unreal, it is set during the Battle of Britain. And fittingly, a family of rubenesque dream nazis parade around the hotel almost unnoticed, during this their last hurrah. The characters we meet here are harshly and unbelievably real. Three loveless characters are caught in a bitter, power struggle. The realizations these characters make about themselves are highly sensitive and unrealistic, but their emotions are true and terrible. The play spins to higher levels of drama and the echelon of Williams' fantastic world. This play won the New York's Dram Critics Circle Award and is especially notable for a stunning, original poem by Williams.
