A novel by

The first adventure in a Western series from acclaimed author Bill Yenne!

Gideon Safford is a westering man, a chaser of horizons. This is partly from inclination, but mainly because he is a wanted man, on the run from the law because of a terrible night in Kentucky long ago, and a crime he did not commit.
Heading into the Rockies as the snows come, he hopes to get across the Continental Divide before winter. If madness can be defined in an allegory, there are few allegories more apt than Gideon Safford’s blind obsession with crossing the Divide on the cusp of a Montana winter.

This westering man stops for refreshment and a night's rest at the Dollar Saloon in a little town of ranchers and small-time prospectors in the Elk Fork country of Montana Territory. A chance intervention in a gunfight forces Safford to kill a man in order to save another. Unfortunately, the shooting upsets the delicate balance among rivalries, touching off a war that consumes the Elk Fork country.

As a mysterious rogue sniper attacks both sides, and as Safford intervenes, he can only hope and pray that he will see it though before the blizzards come.

Previous Praise For Bill Yenne:

Bill Yenne’s Death and Betrayal Under the Big Sky is a master class in western story telling. Taken from the simple Good vs. Evil theme, Yenne spins a tale where the plot twists and turns at every fork in the trail. Set in the wilds of Northern Montana, bounty hunter Bladen Cole is hired to track down four men wanted for killings in Gallatin City. Wanted dead or alive. Dead is much easier, but Cole wants justice just as much as he wants the reward. He believes they must be able to testify for justice to be served. With outlaws escaping and hired guns trying to prevent their return to Gallatin City, Bladen Cole must navigate the Blackfoot country north of the Marias River, wilderness trails, and the treachery of men, to see justice done.’ —Lane R. Warenski, bestselling author of the ‘Frontier Scout’ series

Bill Yenne is the award winning author of more than three dozen nonfiction books on historical topics and a dozen novels, including two series of Westerns with Dusty Saddle. He grew up in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana, where he spent a great deal of time on horseback in the rugged backcountry. He is an active member of Western Writers of America. The Wall Street Journal notes that he writes with ‘cinematic vividness.’
