Athletic and prone to seek out adventures usually considered more suitable for boys, Emily Darlington never did fit in with most of the girls with whom she has associated. Even at the special girls’ academy in New Ponca, Oklahoma Territory, she was tolerated, at best. Years after she graduates, she learns her father is ill.
