The Augustus Bust

(2026)
(The fourth book in the AG Barnett's Mystery Singles series)
A Story by

A retired Major is found at the foot of his stairs with a marble bust of Augustus Caesar beside him. The police call it an accident. The new vicar isn't so sure.

Wiltshire, 1947. Reverend James Innes, recently demobbed and sent to cover a small parish until its proper incumbent recovers, is called to Hartley Grange on his third day to say the right words over Major Ashwell. He notices the wound. He notices where the bust has fallen. He says nothing. Saying nothing is a habit he picked up in North Africa and refined in Italy, and there is no better use for it than the first hour after a death.

The Grange is a convalescent home now. Eight wounded officers. A cook who locks up at a quarter to ten. A Captain with a walking stick and a grievance. James has a habit of listening longer than is comfortable, and the war taught him to spot a misdirection when he sees one.

The Augustus Bust is the fourth AG Barnett Mystery Single. A quietly observant 1940s whodunnit perfect for fans of classic English crime.
