Gloucestershire, August 1895. Cornelius Hartwell, retired wool merchant and devoted amateur botanist, is found on the floor of his study with an empty cordial glass for company.
The doctor calls it a tragedy. Ada Selwyn, paid companion, parson's daughter, white streak at her temple, plain dress, and a working knowledge of every dangerous plant in an English hedgerow. She was supposed to be reading Pliny aloud after supper, instead she's reading the household.
Sergeant Caldwell of the county constabulary runs a sensible investigation. He does not require the observations of a lady's companion. He is going to get them anyway.
