A SCIENCE FICTION NOVELETTE IN THE POST-APOCALYPTIC TRADITION OF J.G. BALLARD

THE COLLAPSE OF THE HUMAN MIND...

It has been eighteen months since the mysterious neurological illness known as Global Delusional Disorder spread across the world, leaving billions dead and the scattered survivors trying to come to terms with the psychic catastrophe that has decimated humanity.

Psychiatrists are at a loss to explain the disorder’s origin or the speed with which it has spread. What begins with the expression of strange beliefs and bizarre convictions quickly develops into a total retreat from consensus reality, as if the conscious mind has severed its connection with the external world, withdrawing into itself until the victims become catatonic, and succumb to dehydration and starvation.

Still grieving after the murder of his wife and daughter by a man suffering from Global Delusional Disorder, psychiatrist Dr. David Carlin vows to find the cause of the psychic disaster that has wiped out nine tenths of the human species. With him is Alex, a fourteen-year-old girl whose own family suffered a similar fate to Carlin’s. Together, they travel through an almost completely deserted world toward the final mystery of the Time Desert.
