When Richard Redgrave is employed by the British and Scottish Bank, he is asked to investigate two strange events. A former worker had committed suicide within a week of leaving the company, while another employee, Mr Craig, a rich man due to a recent inheritance, had not quit his position as expected. Redgrave is asked to explain these matters and so he begins his investigations. He soon meets Teresa, Mr Craig's daughter, who is extremely alluring. Unfortunately for Redgrave, she is also adept at telling lies and he cannot afford to be distracted... This is Bennett's first attempt at popular detective fiction and he does not disappoint.
