Tribune Aulus Vitruvius Flavius is an overlord in conquered Britannia.

Flavius' life is upended when he becomes embroiled in a blood-soaked uprising led by the Iceni queen Boudicca. Wounded, Flavius escapes and re-joins the army to exact his revenge on the rebels.

The tribune's actions catch the attention of the emperor, who summons him to Rome to reorganise the city's firefighting watchmen.

But Flavius' life becomes endangered not by fire but by murder - after he uncovers a plot involving a cunning killer and Rome's most bloodthirsty ruler. Flavius is caught between a mysterious assassin, who is stalking him, and the threat of losing favour with the volatile Nero.

The tribune must find a murderer in the smoke and flames of a burning Rome - but when the Praetorians proclaim another emperor, Flavius must also capture Nero to avoid civil war.

Recommended for fans of Steven Saylor, Simon Scarrow and Ben Kane.
