A truck route crosses a river on a bridge that has to be gone before morning.

Drennan's squad receives more demolition than it has carried on any previous mission because the target is not a small structure. It is a steel-and-timber crossing built to take vehicles, and destroying it means getting long, awkward charges up a bank and onto the structure in the dark.

The squad is down to four men for the operation. Hale is out with a gunshot wound. Lindquist's damaged leg bars him from the soft ground on the far side. Madsen can design and place the demolition, but his injured shoulder cannot carry the heavy load. The squad goes upriver without its automatic weapon and with every man carrying work that used to belong to someone else.

One rule governs the mission: nobody blows the crossing while one of their own is on the far side without a way off. That means somebody must physically verify the escape route before Madsen fires the charges.

Night Bridge is Book 5 of the Navy SEALs series, a Vietnam War novel of demolition, river infiltration, hard physical limits, and a four-man team trying to take away the road before daylight.
