This is not a Print-on-Demand or facsimile book. It is a reprint paperback published in 1988 by Perennial Fiction Library of Harper & Row of the 1968 book which was originally published by William Morrow. The cover illustration is by George Corsillo. To the dirt poor town of Enigma, Georgia, a local farm boy returns as a prosperous faith healer. Though the townsfolk give way to a mindless idolization, the Gospel Singer is tormented by the extent of his deception and is forced to admit his corrupt activities. This was the first novel publsihed by Crews and over the next eight years, he published seven more. After completing his most celebrated work A Childhood in 1978, and committing himself to writing non-fiction and several unproduced screenplays, Crews did not publish another major novel until All We Need of Hell in 1987.
