The Black Spiders

(1957)
(Book 28 in the Department Z series)
A novel by

Nigel Murray is jolted awake in the middle of the night by a disturbance on the grounds of his rural cottage in Devonshire. Two men with guns are approaching the well in his garden, and he can just make out a pair of hands, desperately clutching the well's edge.
The men scatter, never to be seen again, but in their place is a woman, badly hurt but still breathing, who claims to be the kidnapped niece of a political heavyweight from the sleepy island of Canna.
That same night, a murder is committed on Canna for the first time in decades.
What is happening on once-peaceful Canna? Is this woman who she claims to be? And why has she been left in Nigel Murray's garden?
Murray soon finds himself pulled into a tale of danger, conspiracy and treason and makes a call he'd hoped to avoid... this is a case only Department Z can solve.
