Nina and her friend, Trixie, have signed on for a summer internship in archaeology. They drive up to the mesa top at seven thousand feet in northern Arizona to excavate Indian ruins. Right before ascending, they pick up a newspaper. That very night there is to be a dedication of the museum. The guest speaker will be Josh Van Der Meer Jr., the adopted son of the late Dr. Van Der Meer who was about to give the same speech himself the summer before when he was abducted. He was never found and is presumed to be dead. His daughter, Clara, from his first marriage, carries on in his name.

Trixie blames Nina for getting her involved in an unsolved murder mystery. Nina says she is glad just to find a program in archaeology that will accept high school students. Nina hopes, though, that it's not an omen the way they have such a hard time driving the windy, twisty road to the top.

They are greeted by a black lab and an Abyssinian cat. A trailer door bangs open. A dark-haired fellow who introduces himself as Josh Jr. demands to know who they are. Nina tries to tell him, but he insists they're not authorized. He dials 911 and demands that the police arrest them.

Murder on the Mesa is a young adult murder thriller novel.
