They say that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Such a cute saying. What do you do if life gives you necromancer powers and a top-secret organization that is rather out to get you?
Right? Not a lot of lemonade being made from that.
Too bad that’s my reality. That’s our reality.
My name is Ashley Copeland, and I’m a Ceidwad. A keeper. My job is to tend a ghost city filled with ghosts living their lives, waiting to pass on. My connection with the city powers it. Make it possible for the ghosts to live in a peaceful place, protected from magic users that might be out to trap them and harvest them for power.
I’m also the judge, jury, and executioner for ghosts that are being bad.
That’s all well and good, except the US Government and the Department of Anomalous Affairs is rather set against the cities. To the point that they’re moving their pieces into place to take us down.
I’m twenty-seven and new to my powers, so how do I have any hope or expectation of surviving a full-court press by the government and a worldwide secret organization? Their attacks and aggression are ramping up, and it’s leaving me scrambling, trying to corral my own pieces and bring them together to put them on the playing board.
Everything is on the line. The lives of the ghosts in my city. The lives of my new friends. The lives of my expanding family. We have nearly overwhelming forces arrayed against us, and yet it’s up to me to build our defenses so that we can weather the oncoming storm.
It’s taken everything in me to get to this point, yet I can’t give up now. I’m not wired that way. I didn’t survive from the time my mother slid into the bottle and the baggie as a little girl to now by doing that. I’m used to the fight. To having life set against me and virtually no one on my side. Well, now I have people on my side.
And I believe it’s time for me and my people to shove open the door the world’s trying to slam shut, trapping us in the darkness. It’s time to introduce ourselves to the world.
