A kind farmer's daughter, a thoughtful son of an earl, and a jealous uncle with a deadly competition…

Barra Hume grew up on a poor farm in the Dunbar region, which has recently lost a bloody battle with the English. Because of this, she finds the woods surrounding her home full of both enemy soldiers and men seeking to aid in the uprising. Due to the activity, she is not overly surprised to find a wounded man in the woods, however, she is surprised when it is Brodgar, a man she and her father have helped before. After his rescuing her from certain death, and rescuing him in return, Barra finds herself traveling with him, and learning more about him then she bargained for.

After quickly realizing there is more to him then she knew, Barra finds herself being taken along to his ancestral fortress. When she finds out the extent of his deception, Barra must decide for herself if she can trust the dark and thoughtful Brodgar, and in the love that seems to be blossoming between them, before the decision is made for her.

A Determined Protector

Brodgar, son and rightful heir of the late earl of Blackheath, has joined the band of Scottish rebels determined to defeat the English attackers. However, he has not been completely honest with those he is fighting with and met along the way by not telling them the complete truth of his identity, allowing them to believe he is just a simple farmer like they are in order to build his reputation as well as hide from his conniving uncle. That all begins to change when he is injured in the woods near the Hume farm. When he and a small band of his soldiers are attacked, along with Barra Hume, he must return to his ancestral fortress and his deceptive uncle.

Trying desperately to thwart his nephew, Brodgar's uncle does everything to prevent him from taking his rightful place as Laird of Blackheath, even to the point of betraying his own soldiers. After a surprise ambush under questionable circumstances, Brodgar is even more determined to protect Barra within the perceived safety of the fortress, and win back her trust and affection.

A Love so Determined

Returning to the fortress, and finding it under siege, Barra and Brodgar create a plan using a secret tunnel known only by a few to gain access to the fortress, and save the people left within it's walls. Rousting the attackers, and finding the truth behind the ambush, they are finally able to allow their rising love. Life, and love, will not be easy for a kind farmer's daughter and the quiet rightful laird with danger coming from both their English invaders and his jealous uncle.

Can Barra forgive his deception and learn to trust him again – or will it destroy the love building between them?

Can Brodgar protect her from the English invaders, and his jealous uncle – or will his own choices separate them forever?
