A mission gone wrong. Twelve years of guilt. Now the past is calling him back.
Twelve years ago, SAS soldiers Andrew Sterling and Frank Malone were sent on a covert mission to locate an opium compound in the remote mountains of northern Afghanistan. The mission quickly unravelled, and Malone was killed. Sterling escaped, but the memories and the guilt never left him.
In present-day Syria, a group of Russian mercenaries are brought to a Damascus military hospital with horrific injuries caused by a terrifying and previously unknown chemical agent. Sterling, now part of an elite unit tracking weapons of mass destruction, is deployed to investigate. As he enters Syria covertly, it soon becomes clear that a cache of the new weapon has gone missing from a Russian storage facility. When Sterling comes across a grainy photo of a brutal Afghan warlord wearing Malone’s talisman, he is forced to contemplate the unthinkable.
Driven by the possibility that his friend may still be alive, Sterling races to uncover the truth and stop the weapon before it’s unleashed. Along the way, he must grapple with hardened Russian mercenaries, the corrupt Syrian military, Pakistan’s shadowy ISI, and ultimately the Afghan warlord himself. But in a world of shifting loyalties and buried secrets, nothing is what it seems, and the truth may be deadlier than the mission itself.
