In a little brown envelope there is a letter with the words:One Down. Five To Go.

Detective Inspector Gregory Vaughn, one of Manchester's finest, is bemused to have been called out to the scene of a gruesome road accident.

Initial impressions of the scene all point to an accident, but further inspection of the vehicle uncovers a porcelain doll that bears an uncanny resemblance to the deceased.

D. I. Vaughn and the Greater Manchester Police are on high alert after a second victim is found with another lookalike doll. Vaughn and his team are struggling to find evidence relating to the murder investigation and are racing against time to prevent six killings.

With no clear motives - gender, age and race are all consequential - Vaughn has heightened the police presence in Manchester in hopes of catching the macabre serial killer plaguing the city.

It is not until contact with doll experts, a citywide media appeal and another body appears that the investigating team begin to make clear progress with the case.

Will the police be able to catch the individual behind the killings?
