Alex Law is lost; more than twenty years of secret wars and spying have left him numbed and spiritually bankrupt. An alcoholic womaniser and veteran CIA 'genius', famed for his insurgency techniques that helped the Cold War in Africa during the 1970s and 1980s, Alex is now a comic anachronism in the world of espionage. Hopelessly he longs for his estranged wife, Helen, and a return to the days of their youthful happiness, when he had proudly followed in the blue-blooded footsteps of his own father, a famous Cold Warrior.
