Winners Die

(2010)
A novel by

Harvey Ace, Intrepid gambler/horse player and licensed detective, believes he is being stalked by a beautiful but estranged lover who threatened him with death years ago.
While acting as a movie consultant about racing jockeys at a famous street corner of Los Angeles, he is certain he saw his former lover, Ann Whitson, silhouetted against the LA sun, ready to put a bullet through him.
In the process of determining whether his vision was true he uncovers her murder and then a political conspiracy to fix the upcoming new State Assembly and Senate Districts in a chaotic political year in California. The Gerrymandering
conspiracy is to control voting districts through various illegal means. It involves millions. The rewards to the politicians are worth much more.
Innocents are killed in the nefarious scheme. Suspicion falls on Ace and perhaps a political mole in the Los Angeles Police Dept. Ace persists in solving Ann's murder and unraveling the gerrymandering conspiracy. In the process he falls deeply in love with a beautiful woman who is uncertain about a life
with a gambler. His racing Mare, Winning Silks, proves to be his best friend.
