Arrived at Carnacki’s home after a dinner invitation, the narrator observes that Carnacki seems injured.  The reason is quite simple: his latest case has provided him with danger. The narrator asks him what happened, and Carnacki shows him a series of photographs of a young, beautiful woman.  In one of them, she is looking at a horse’s hoof.
