Washington Irving (1783-1859) was a short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".

Tales of the Alhambra (1832) is a collection of essays, sketches, and stories inspired by his 1828 visit to the Alhambra in Granada in Spain. Irving recounts his travels in Andalusia, adding stories and legends from the locals to his direct observations.

The work combines description, myth, and narratives of real historical events.
