Protective Pucking Orc

A single mom on the run. An intimidating orc hockey defenseman. One little girl they'll both risk everything to save.

I came to Bramblebluff to disappear: Keep my head down, wait tables at a breakfast diner, protect Rosa. And never,
ever let anyone get close enough to ask questions.

Then Dakvaar started sitting in my section every morning.

I don’t know much about hockey, but apparently he’s the defenseman for the Teal Terrors. Which makes sense, honestly; this orc looks like he was personally built to stop bad things from getting past him. Huge, silent, fierce. The kind of male who could probably stare a charging bull into reconsidering its life choices.

He barely talks. Just drinks coffee, leaves ridiculous tips, and somehow notices everything anyway… Like the fact that my four-year-old hides in the diner corner during my shifts. Like the way I flinch when strangers get too loud. Like the fact that I’m scared all the time.

When the danger I’ve been hiding from finally catches up with us, and I take Rosa to run…we accidentally run smack into Dakvaar. Without blinking, he inserts himself between me and the men hunting us with the same cold focus he uses to defend the net.

Now Rosa and I are living in his apartment while the entire hockey team closes ranks around us. Dakvaar says we’re safe; nobody touches what belongs to him. And the terrifying part is…I think he means it.

But I can’t let him be hurt when my past finally catches us.
