Duel of Queens

(1984)
A novel by

When Henry YIII decided to discard his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, in favour of the fascinating Anne Boleyn, he could never have imagined that it would take him six years to achieve his heart's desire. The ensuing contest of wills between the two women most deeply concerned in the affair, ruined the health of both and brought them to the grave within four months of each other. Catherine, firmly entrenched behind her immovable belief that death alone could dissolve a Christian marriage, did everything in her power to oust her younger rival, showing a determination of which her beleaguered husband had not thought her capable. Anne Boleyn, with much to gain, displayed a ruthlessness in the struggle which shocked even the besotted Henry, and when her body failed her in the fight to produce a male heir, he had no scruples about abandoning her to a fate which he considered she richly deserved.
