East of Niece

(2001)
(The sixth book in the Sydney Sloane series)
A novel by

New York City private investigator Sydney Sloane has pretty much seen it all - shoot-outs, terrorists, crazed murderers - and survived it all intact. Now she is forced to face her greatest fear, the one thing in the world that she hates the most: vacation. Cajoled by her lover Leslie Washburn into taking a much needed break from New York and the detective business, Sydney reluctantly finds herself in France, intending only to visit with her niece Vickie, lounge in first class hotels, drink champagne, and avoid all semblance of work.

But the quiet visit with Vickie isn't to be. In rapid succession, Sydney learns that her niece has married secretly, her husband Gavin's parents were just killed nearby in a suspicious car accident and the police are looking for Gavin who, unfortunately, is nowhere to be found. Thousands of miles from home, in a country where she doesn't speak the language, Sydney finds herself in the midst of a murder investigation. Now it's up to her to find Gavin and unravel the complicated truth surrounding his parent's deaths and his own disappearance. But someone out there doesn't welcome her inquiries in the slightest and time is swiftly running out for all of them.
