Shadows of the Past

Newly appointed parish constable, Charles Fresnay, finds on his first day in office he has to deal with a brutal murder. But his investigation is bedevilled by local indifference after the mob hangs a Romany suspect. Undeterred, Fresnay continues his enquiries and gradually uncovers the reason for the killing of Colonel Tom Symonds, rooted in a past scarred with betrayal, murder, rape, and revenge. It is a story that ranges over the London underworld riddled with forgers, the desperate life on the 'hulks' in the Thames, the dangers and battles in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars.
But as he gets nearer to the truth Fresnay faces his own personal dilemma as his past as a former Bow Street Runner rises up to confront him, and old guilty secrets force him to reconsider what action he must now take...
