Danger is a daily reality for Ken Roberts and the European immigrant families who scratch out a living in the deep coal mines of Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. In a camp of Lebanese immigrants, Rosalind Gilbran lives with her grandfather and grandmother. Ken takes a walk on the mountain and meets the beautiful Rosa. After a few more chance meetings, Ken gives the petite gypsy a Bible and tells her about his Savior. When Rosa's grandparents discover she has been secretly meeting a "coal cracker," they hastily accept an offer of a marriage contract for Rosa to a cruel and hot-tempered man. Rosa's only desire is to run away ... but Ken finds her in the woods and convinces her to return to her grandparents. But will Ken's advice mean he'll lose Rosa forever?
