Rex Yelverton is the character through whose eyes the drama develops. He is aged 29 when the action start: a talented solicitor like his father before him, he is in practice in London. He is an aficionado of winter sports especially ski-ing and much of the action occurs on the slopes in Switzerland.
In his own words: "I suppose I was no better and no worse than thousands of other fellows of my age. Men coming down from Oxford and flung into the whirl of London life are not usually Puritans or ascetics. I suppose I was much like them. Life was young in me, and fortune had been kind. My work kept me busy during the day; my evenings were filled with music and my 'wireless' ... ."
Women do not seem to be attracted to him although he not un-attractive, un - intelligent or with any discernibly un pleasant character traits. Then he meets Thelma Audley and he is struck by the proverbial thunderbolt. "She was the one woman in all the world for me." But she is married! Happily or unhappily? Who is she mixed up with? And Dr. Feng - the mysterious Chinamen with the ultra long beard?
And The Crystal Claw... now read on.
