An assassination attempt on a university professor precludes a terrorist attack that rips through Manchester's Piccadilly station killing scores of people and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in the city. People want revenge. But they're scared. And the recriminations begin.
But are the authorities right to blame it all on a particular extremist who was a model British citizen from Rochdale until he was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay and then released without any charges being brought against him?
DCI Lauren Blake of the Greater Manchester police has her own reasons for wanting to bring the guilty to justice. But when a series of apparently unconnected murders start to appear as if they might be linked to the bombing, she begins to discover that she is up against forces that have even less of a conscience than the most dangerous of terrorist organisations.
AUTHOR'S NOTE - The story in this book first appeared in my novel 'Best Friend, Worst Enemy' which I discontinued several years ago. I've updated the story and re-written the entire piece, but the plot remains the same.
