After the Civil War, Holly Porter and her young son, Justin, journey to the Montana Territory wilderness to find her gold-fevered husband, Isaac. Near Fort Phil Kearny, she and Justin are captured by a renegade band of Sioux and separated. In captivity and under the guidance of Old Calf Woman, a venerable Blackfoot medicine woman, Holly becomes know as Wolf Woman for the wolf-skin jacket she wears. But her mission remains unaltered: She must find and rescue her son, known to be living among Red Cloud's people-and to do so she needs the help of army officer Lane Hodges, a tough frontier soldier trying to make peace with Red Cloud. She is also determined to be reunited with Isaac who, being duped by his gold-mining partners and at the mercy of his evil brother, has lost hope that she and Justin are still alive.
