The war in the Pacific rages. United States Marines have swept across Guadalcanal, yet still the Japanese refuse to give up.

They establish a defensive position on Mount Austen from where they can launch harassing attacks, and when they believe the Americans are looking the other way, launch a devastating attack to take back the island. PFC Jesse Ferrell, Second Platoon, Company C, has his own problems. Forced to mercy kill a dying Marine to save him from an agonizing death, a new recruit arrives who could be his twin. Douglas Lyndon is a reminder of the life he took, and he vows to protect the new man. A penance to make up for killing the wounded man, and in time maybe the nightmares will retreat into the darkness. Provided he can keep Doug Lyndon alive.

Company C, is handed the mission to recce the slopes of Mount Austen and map the Jap defenses. Yet the Japanese have other plans, and they launch a series of new attacks, hammering into the Company and lashing them with intensive fire that threatens to force them to pull back. Their cowardly platoon Lieutenant, Robert Morgan, orders them to turn tail and run. Jesse Ferrell with his buddy Dan O’Brien refuse to retreat, and joined by the platoon sergeant, they stand and fight. Yet the slopes of Mount Austen are infested with Japs, and nothing less than a mad, suicidal dash can achieve victory.
