(2002)
A novel by

After a bitter divorce, Troy Kirkwood and his five-year-old daughter, Meika, move in in with his parents, Nola and Ron. Troy is a devoted father and son. While at the movies with his daughter, Troy is unexpectedly called away. He never returns to the movie theater. Nola and Ron know that something is terribly wrong. Four days later the police discover Troy's body and Nola's worse fears are realized.

Vann, Troy's older brother, and Ron vow to find Troy's killer while Nola promises to raise Troy's daughter. However, there is a problem. The police have no leads and Troy's crack-addicted ex-wife has recently resurfaced and is demanding custody of their daughter.

As the Kirkwoods struggle through family court and Troy's murder investigation, the realization that Troy's death has the power to destroy their family forces them to combine their emotional and spiritual strength to keep the family intact.
