After a long day at her family’s bakery-café in Crescent Creek, Colorado, former private investigator Kate Reed is relaxing at home when her neighbor bursts through the door with a plea for help. The dog she is supposed to watch for two weeks has vanished—and the neighbor has a hunch that nefarious thieves are responsible.
Although the missing pet is eventually located, the search leads to a series of related crimes: burglary, kidnapping, insurance fraud and murder. At first, there are no significant leads.
