In 1103, Rhodri ap Gwyfd, a brave Welsh horse warrior, embarks on a perilous quest to find and return the remains of his murdered brother, a spiritual journey for his grandfather. Raised on the island of Ynys Mon, Rhodri was trained to be a white druid, a healer with special sight. Although strongly connected to the old gods, Rhodri also feels the pull of his father's warrior blood and ultimately yearns to embrace his identity as a true horse warrior.
As Rhodri and his mercenary friends rode into the vibrant city of Genoa, the Church was facing challenges from powerful kings and emperors eager to control both faith and governance across Europe. To strengthen its influence, the Church used every means possible to uphold the Christian faith. Any deviation from the Christian path'''whether it be paganism, druidism, or following the old godswas met with swift and brutal punishment.
As Rhodri prepares for his quest into the Italian mountains, his distinctive pagan druidic tattoos draw dangerous attention in Genoa. He and his family have known brutal persecution before, and he decides to leave. However, before he can do so, a fanatical Benedictine, eager to make an example, arrests him and seeks evidence to condemn Rhodri to public burning or hanging.
Can his formidable allies assist Rhodri in escaping the deadly fate that looms over him? Will he ever be able to embark on this vital quest for his grandfather?
