The ‘Greatwinter Series’ by Sean McMullen has a unique and somewhat complex publishing history, reflecting its development across both Australian and international markets:

The series originated as short stories before evolving into novels. The first two books, Voices in the Light (1994) and Mirrorsun Rising (1995), were initially published in Australia by Aphelion Publications. These two works were later significantly revised, combined, and released as a single volume—Souls in the Great Machine (1999)—which served as the American debut and the first book in the internationally recognized trilogy. The subsequent books in the trilogy are The Miocene Arrow (2000) and Eyes of the Calculor (2001); both were published by Tor in the United States.

The Greatwinter series is celebrated for its blend of post-apocalyptic, steampunk, and cyberpunk elements, as well as its imaginative narrative structure.
