Black Dawn

(The fourth book in the Caribee of the Hiltons series)
A novel by

The year is 1810.

When Richard Hilton arrives in Jamaica it is to take up the post offered by his uncle, managing the family plantations, and to perhaps one day inherit them.

But that day comes sooner than he, or his brother older Anthony who accompanies him, could possibly expect.

Thrust into his unexpected role as owner upon arrival, it soon becomes clear that while both are the sons of a prominent abolitionist, they both have very different stances on the matter.

Not everyone approves of Richard's egalitarian approach and the rumours begin to spread.

Entangled with women each more beautiful and dangerous than the last, Richard flees the island, ashamed and disgusted with himself following a drunken night of passion.

Which suits society very well...

His rakish brother Anthony takes over, a man consumed by power, by a sexual hunger, and driven beyond the bounds of depraved island society.

Before long, the once progressive Hilton plantation is now a backwater ruled savagely by the lash, and thoughts wonder to people past...

Shipwrecked and near dead, Richard nonetheless endures.

In his self-imposed exile, Richard discovers himself as he's plunged into the wider turbulence of the Caribbean, fighting against his own kind.

Wars rage and battles are lost or won, but always in the distance is the soft cry of Jamaica, and the desire to bring the ideal of abolition to a reality, and restore himself as rightful owner.

'Black Dawn' is masterfully written, Christopher Nicole's historical novel combines romance and intrigue, adventure and social history, in a gripping piece of epic storytelling.
