The Devil Upstairs

(2019)
A novel by

Cat Thomas relocates to Edinburgh, fleeing death threats related to her job as a fraud investigator in Florida. Her Dean Village flat in an 18th-century building is utterly idyllic except for one thing ... the devil upstairs. This devil is an inconsiderate young dude who plays loud music, has wild parties and seems intent on disrupting Cat's sleep.

Cat lies awake, delirious, dreaming of ways to kill him. Her past demons haunt her; at work, her investigations lead her into dark confrontations with invisible powers. Then, after one wickedly rowdy night, Cat complains about the devil to her colleague, Agnes – a flamboyant, witchy Goth. She suggests Cat accompany her to a "conclave" and Cat tags along, telling herself the Dark Arts have no place in her rational, ordered world.

Even so, Cat's life becomes eerily, blissfully peaceful. Until one night, ambulances blare outside. The "devil upstairs" is dead. No signs of forced entry, no fingerprints, nothing. Cat convinces herself it had nothing to do with her. But she’s on tenterhooks to see who will replace the old devil upstairs.

Her new neighbour is devilishly handsome. Stylish, worldly, considerate, with a glint in his eye: he's too good to be true. Cat's infatuated. But nothing is as it seems. Problems disappear but fresh ones arise. Could this new devil upstairs really be Satan himself?

"Anthony O'Neill is the most ingenious and versatile writer I know. Every novel he writes is an individual gem that sparkles with its own particular brilliance. Wherever the magic carpet of his imagination takes him next, I definitely want to be along for the ride." - Robert J Harris
