Gwendolen is only 17 when her marriage to Sir Rex Brittain is arranged and she travels to Chastell Y Ddraing on the island of Mona where the wedding takes place. Her bridegroom is loving and generous, his uncle Ambrose a kindly figure, but there are mysteries in the great house that centre upon to two ancient paintings, danger in the shapes of Megan Gorlais, Rex's half-sister, and her bastard son, Morris, temptation in the ssmile and Bedwin, the adopted brother.

When Mistress Vivien, who lives with her crippled father on an islet in the bay,. brings her daughter Ellen bike from a convent in Ireland, the stage is set for a conflict between the forces of good and evil into which Gwendolen is drawn to re-enact an ancient part and not until she has known both joy and heartbreak does she begin to glean the true nature of the secret that, down the centuries, so many had died rather than betray.
