Three acquittals. Three executions. A killer the city’s calling a hero.
On a rain-lashed North London estate, a man is found shot through the head on his knees, hours after a jury let him walk. Two origami angels rest in his upturned palms, their heads dipped in red. No gun. No witnesses. No one on the estate willing to say a single word.
Then a second body turns up in the same posture. Then a third.
Nash and Moretti realise this isn’t a gangland hit. Every victim cheated justice in the same courtroom. Every victim was made to pay for it.
The press christen him the Angel of Mercy. The public start calling him a hero. And he isn’t finished.
Nash and Moretti aren’t the only ones hunting him. Some of the dead belong to a London crime family and they mean to reach the killer first.
The Angel of Mercy believes he’s beyond the reach of any court.
And he hasn't delivered his final verdict.
The blistering fifth case for London detectives Nash and Moretti. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, MJ Arlidge and Cara Hunter.
MEET THE DETECTIVES:
DS Nick Moretti lives alone on a barge in a London marina, drinks his coffee from mismatched charity-shop mugs, and builds model boats in his spare time. He smokes a pipe when he wants to think, forgets to charge his phone more often than is helpful, and works best on instinct. He’s well-liked, not above bending procedure when it suits him, and counting the days to his next holiday in Corfu.
DI Pippa Nash is the kind of senior investigating officer her bosses don’t always know how to handle. Career-driven, with a long stint in covert work behind her, she runs her team by three rules: assume nothing, believe no one, challenge everything. She writes in a blue counsel’s notebook, pours stale coffee into the geranium on her office windowsill, and trains in martial arts when she’s not working a job. Off-duty she rides motorbikes through Scotland, listens to Motörhead, and lives alone in a top-floor flat with no television. Uncompromising on the job, fiercely loyal to her team and five cases on from the day she handpicked Moretti for her team, and still glad she did.
