The boy is afraid of the police. Jack Noble wants to know why.
A schoolteacher is missing, and the people of Lewistown are desperate to find her. The sheriff has them searching the countryside while his deputies work their way through the names of her students.Jack has spent too many years around hunters to mistake what he's seeing.
Somewhere in this town is a child who knows something. And the men with badges want to reach him first.
Jack came to Montana carrying news of a death he couldn't prevent. Now a boy with a missing father may be his only chance to find a woman who could still be alive.
He intends to get to the child before the deputies do.
Protecting him will mean defying a sheriff who controls every deputy and every call for help. It will mean making himself an enemy in a county where everyone knows he's a stranger. And it will put anyone who helps him in the sheriff's sights.
The boy has good reason to be afraid.
The men hunting him are about to have one, too.
