After centuries of oppression, trouble is fermenting in Ireland. As anti-English sentiment builds, fifteen-year-old Ellen Healy falls passionately in love with young British army cadet Guy Forrister, but their relationship appears doomed and will soon be challenged by war and revolution.

Ellen knows she must obtain a scholarship if she is to have a future. She dreams of Guy who has been posted to India and whom she is sure she has lost.
Meanwhile, her fiery cousin, Franny, is targeted by the local womaniser and must battle to survive as a woman in a patriarchal age.

Everything changes in Easter Week 1916 when Ellen's brother, Harry, and his beautiful fiancee Deirdre, join the fight for Irish freedom that erupts in Dublin, and learn at first hand the consequences of defying an empire.
