While Taroniah was being kept busy defeating Wexkarn, the God of Magic, problems were brewing at home. Garlan, King of West Dumfordia, was trying to take over her business interests in Alcitran. He foolishly thought it would be a good idea to kidnap her children and get them under his protection to use them as hostages to ensure her good behavior. Then there is Wexkarn's book of spells to comb through which contains a lot of extremely dangerous spells, some of which inspire Taroniah to attempt something that has only been successfully achieved once before. Since she had promised to give the book to King Kyron, Taroniah and her family set off on a sea voyage to the other side of the world.
Meanwhile, in Marland there is some plot underway to marry her brother off to some girl from Padmouthia. This news starts alarm bells ringing in Taroniah’s head. So much for her hopes of a quiet life at home for a few months!
