The Avenger

As his head cleared the lip of the pit, a gun spat, then another. This was the murderous answer of the gang leader whose identity he had unmasked. The bullets whined over the Texas lawman's head, kicking up smoky spurts of sand. He released his grip on the ladder and dropped back into the pit -- too late. Trapped, surrounded by a gang of cutthroats who would give him no quarter, the Ranger was in deadly peril. Now it looked like the name of the killer would die with him.
