The revolution of the 60s is slow to reach New Zealand, but when it does it throws into sharp relief the lives of the two people at the centre of this novel. Kay and Geoffrey, newly married and full of idealism, have plans to travel, learn, and change the world. But Geoffrey is persuaded by his ambitious father to take up a partnership in Auckland's leading law firm.

As Kay struggles to adapt to unexpected motherhood, and the collapse of her dream, the couple starts to drift apart. Kay finds new friends, ones deemed unsuitable by Geoffrey and his wealthy family. And she discovers things about the city she thought she knew, its present and its past, that drives the wedge between her and her husband even deeper.
