Abomination

(1986)
A novel by

Strange things are happening around the small Welsh village of Pen-Y-Cym, a horrible smell and a clammy foggy atmosphere surround the town, the local chemical factory is producing an experimental pesticide and spraying local fields. Organic farmer Les Earnshaw suspects the factory is the cause of the problems and tries to gather support against the spraying but with little progress as the other farmers are more concerned about cost than the environment.
The spray is designed to work on wildlife pests the same way as herbicides work on weeds, unfortunately although the creatures increase in size was planned, they develop some unintended nasty traits including a taste for human flesh.
Lots of creatures are affected including ants, beetles, earwigs. leeches, frogs and worms. Smith does a great job with the writing, especially the attacks by the creepier insects such as the earwigs, it was often a pretty uncomfortable read.
It does carry an environmental message with several references to Bhopal but is not overtly preachy.
