Dora becomes an orphan when her father dies of his war wounds, her mother having died soon after Dora's birth. She was left in the care of her father's elderly step-sister and her scholar husband, who needed absolute quite in order to work, but all that changed when the husband became ill and needed a six-week rest cure.
