"Look, David," whispered Peter, and pointed ahead. "Can you see it? Look, a little light on top of the Mynd. It's a fire, I'm sure. That aeroplane we heard has crashed. What shall we do?" Luckily, all is well. Pilot and passengers are safe. But from then on mysterious things start to happen in the Witchend area. Pet dogs disappear, and when found again they are often deaf and blind. The disability is only temporary, but what is causing it? Is it something to do with the temperamental scientist Robens who lives in a remote and desolate cottage, or with the unpleasant man they call "The Doctor", both of whom were passengers on the crashed plane? Lone Piners are determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. And when their beloved Scottie Macbeth disappears too, they split up to search for him. David, Peter and Mary think they hear howling in the depths of a mountain cave. Perhaps Mackie is hidden there, but while they are trying to revive him from his doped state, they hear someone (perhaps the wild-eyed Robens) coming back into the cave. They hide on top of a pile of sloping shingle. But, to their horror, the stones start to slip, forwards towards the intruder, and, even worse backwards into what seems in the darkness like a bottomless pit . . .
