Peggy James is a nurse at Cloud Hospital. Returning from leave, she finds Doris Balcombe installed as an orderly. This woman is repulsive yet she seems able to exert a strange, almost uncanny influence over everyone, including Peggy herself and even some of the medical staff. What, especially, is the secret of her hold over Mr Salerno, the attractive surgeon? The theft of drugs, followed by murder, involves a lot of people in a situation where friends become potential enemies.
